Buist Byars & Taylor LLC is a boutique law firm that has cultivated a strong niche in real estate, business matters and litigation here in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. With knowledgeable attorneys, a dedicated support team, up-to-date technology, the implementation of best practices, and an emphasis on personal service, we strive to offer smart strategies and seamless transactions for our clients.
The firm now known as Buist Byars & Taylor LLC was established in 1958 when founding attorney Thomas G. Buist joined his family’s long-standing Charleston law firm, Buist and Buist. In his 45 years of practice, Mr. Buist handled some of the largest real estate transactions in the state of South Carolina, including the sale of Kiawah Island in 1974 and the certification of the title for its re-sale in 1993.
In 1998, Mr. Buist expanded the practice by forming a partnership with his son-in-law, Custis M. Byars. The firm opened an office in Freshfields Village between Kiawah and Seabrook Islands to more conveniently serve the growing number of residential real estate clients in the area. Custis and the Johns Island office team now are entrusted with the vast majority of real estate matters on the islands.
Partner Gray B. Taylor joined the firm in 2001 to manage and grow the commercial real estate and default services practice areas. Gray and other attorneys in the firm’s Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, office represent developers, lenders, local and national builders, and individual landowners in the planning, developing and financing of residential, commercial and mixed-use developments.
Led by partner Tread Josey, residential real estate is also a major area of practice in the Mt. Pleasant office. He handles matters including property sales, purchases, refinances, foreclosure mitigation, and short sale negotiations throughout the Tri-county area, and also works in the commercial realm, particularly leasing.
Another partner, Hamlin O’Kelley, is responsible for the firm’s litigation practice. He represents homeowners and property owners associations, and handles landlord tenant disputes, foreclosures, quiet title actions, construction litigation, and title insurance defense as well as general litigation matters, across South Carolina and beyond.
Building a firm of a high caliber such as Buist Byars & Taylor LLC has been by careful design and through personal associations. Three of the partners – Custis, Gray and Hamlin – met while attending the University of South Carolina School of Law, and the families of Custis and Tread have known each other for years. Each partner strongly believes in the importance of a client-focused practice, which is reflected in the thorough and responsive service they and the firm’s staff deliver.
While residential and commercial real estate matters are Buist Byars & Taylor’s primary areas of focus, our attorneys also handle general litigation, business matters and alternative dispute resolution. We provide counsel on business formation and dissolution, and advise clients on intellectual property protection matters such as patents, trademarks and copyrights. We also review leases and contracts, offer estate planning services, and conduct mediation/arbitration for many types of cases, including product liability, construction, professional negligence (medical and legal), wrongful death claims, and eminent domain/condemnation.
In the event you have a matter which our firm does not generally undertake, we have long standing relationships with most established attorneys in the Charleston area and are happy to make a recommendation.
Professionalism and client satisfaction are the hallmarks of Buist Byars & Taylor LLC, and the firm holds an AV rating (the highest ranking) from Martindale-Hubbell — a true reflection of the accomplishments and integrity of our attorneys. Today, Buist Byars & Taylor maintains the deep roots that Mr. Buist established in the Charleston community, while integrating best practices, up-to-date technology, experienced attorneys, and a dedicated, responsive support staff to provide the highest level of service.
